O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She was able to make it into the top hundred round following the judges' praise for her singing ability. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she was a victim of significant loss during the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed in the bottom three spots and bottom two and bottom two, respectively. The judges were awed by her performance, and advised viewers to choose singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the third place again. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7, 2005, when O'Neil made it into the final two of the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially made public by President Paul Martin immediately.
